Sara Z. Phelps is the recipient of Ragdale’s Schumann Family Fellowships for Art + Well-being
Sara Z. Phelps (she/her) is a queer writer from Southern California. A former Buddhist nun, her work explores gender, sexuality, desire, devotion, illness, power, and control. Sara graduated summa cum laude from UC Davis, where she received the Leon H. Mayhew Award for outstanding achievement in the humanities and service to the university. A 2025 Tin House Scholar, Sara’s work has also been supported by Hedgebrook, Ragdale, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Sara is the proud co-organizer of “Desire, Calling,” a queer reading series and all-ages dance party in San Diego.
