Rachel Walker is the recipient of the Craig H. Neilsen Fellowship.

Rachel Walker is a writer and journalist living in Boulder, Colorado, with more than two decades of experience covering the American West. Her reporting has explored environmental change, outdoor culture, and the people—athletes, guides, scientists, workers, and families—whose lives are shaped by rugged landscapes. Her work has appeared in The Washington Post, Outside, Runner’s World, and other national publications.

Having has spent much of her career paying close attention to the relationship between people and place, Rachel has written from mountain towns, river corridors, wildfire burn scars, and ski areas across the West. She’s drawn to stories that reveal how individuals navigate risk, ambition, community, and the natural world’s indifference. This long immersion in outdoor and environmental journalism helps anchor her current project: a memoir about the year following a devastating ski accident that caused a spinal cord injury and nearly left her quadriplegic.

The injury forced Rachel into a kind of stillness that ran counter to everything she’d built her life around. Her completed manuscript traces that year of recovery—one marked by physical pain, fear, and uncertainty, but also by an unexpected sense of clarity. The memoir explores what it means to be given a second chance, and how the process of healing reshapes a person’s understanding of control, identity, and resilience. It follows her through rehabilitation, setbacks, and the slow rebuilding of both body and self, capturing a transformation that unfolded not only physically but emotionally and spiritually.

Though she’s covered countless stories about risk and the outdoors, the accident pushed Rachel to confront those themes from the inside. The result is a narrative that blends her reporter’s eye for detail with a more personal examination of vulnerability, survival, and the ways we make meaning after life abruptly changes course.

A longtime runner and lover of mountain trails, Rachel still finds solace outside, though the experience carries new dimensions after injury and recovery. She lives in Boulder with her husband and two sons and continues to write about the intersections of nature, human endurance, and the quiet, complicated decisions that shape a life.
