Kathleen Melin’s work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, Best American Essays, and Best of the Net. She is the author of By Heart (Clover Valley Press October 2008), a memoir of progressive home-based learning recognized in the University of Minnesota’s 21 Book Salute. She works in both fiction and non-fiction. Her work has appeared in national and international publications including Poets & Writers; Under the Sun; Split Rock Review; The Baltimore Review; Feminist Parenting; Brain and Life Magazine; Dance, Somatics and Spiritualities; and many others. She has an MFA from the University of Minnesota.
Melin has worked in education as a teacher, presenter, and passionate advocate for people of all ages, abilities, and disabilities, whose choices have been limited by race, class, gender, and geography. She has taught at the University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin Colleges, Summit School for the Arts, Northwoods Technical Institute, and at arts centers, conferences, festivals, libraries, and farms.
Melin is the founder of Tributary, which brings accomplished national authors from diverse backgrounds to the Upper Saint Croix Valley, offers participatory writing to area residents, and fosters local authors, bookstores, art organizations, and libraries. She is also proprietor of Kindred Farm, a rustic retreat offering low-cost live/work studios to artists and contemplatives. Her farm has been a demonstration project for renewable energy and sustainable living through Wisconsin Focus on Energy, the Midwest Renewable Energy Association, Willing Workers on Organic Farms (WWOOF), and local organizations.
She is thrilled to have a residency at Ragdale.
