Dance

San Francisco, CA

Johnny Huy Nguyễn is a Vietnamese multidisciplinary dance artist based in the unceded Ramaytush - Ohlone territory of Yelamu also known as San Francisco. His practice weaves together movement, theater, multimedia, spoken word, installation, and the occasional humor to create physical works dealing with themes of masculinity, grief, cultural legacy, and intergenerational trauma through a healing lens. Often reckoning with histories of violence and erasure, his practice lives at the intersection of the personal, political, and the spiritual to invoke performance as present day alchemy and ritual that looks to ancestral practices of the past and imagines possibilities for the future. Nguyễn is a 2022 Isadora Duncan Dance Award recipient, 2025 Haas Creative Power Award Finalist, 2023 United States of Asian America Featured Artist, and 2021 APAture Festival Featured Artist. He has been awarded residencies at Ragdale, Caldera, 500 Capp St (David Ireland House) and San Jose State University. His work has received support from the California Arts Council, Kenneth Rainin Foundation, San Francisco Arts Commission, and Creative Capacity Fund.
